Cognitive Information About Flowers

Millions of people buy flowers for people they love every day – both on holidays or particular dates, and just in order to make something pleasant to their loved ones. This simple element of our everyday life still represents one of the oldest traditions in the human history. Flowers have been on the first place all throughout our history. Proofs of their popularity can be found in different myths, religious texts, and folk tales. Various kinds of flowers were applied as food and continue to be used as food till the present day; others are known for curing properties and are used in medicine. They were applied by Greeks and Romans several centuries ago as people at that time believed that the scent of flowers purifies the atmosphere and decreases intoxication. Even celebrated conquerors known for their mercilessness while at war kept exotic gardens at home. Owing to the high valuation of flowers by mankind they became symbols of different nations. In this way, a rose is a national emblem of England, Honduras and Iran. Italy in its turn is represented by a lily, Japan by a chrysanthemum, Russia by a sunflower, Brazil by a Cattleya etc. The most essential function of flowers, however, is their ability to awake deep human thoughts and feelings the way no other object can. These plants by some miracle embody beauty and tenderness. They can cheer up or to inspire on noble actions. A small bunch of flowers in the center of a dinner table is a symbol of coziness. That is the reason why women, and especially housewives, try to include fresh flowers in their planned expenses. But flowers are symbolic not only in this way. Every flower has its own significance, and so it can help to express people's feelings. Flowers have been applied for centuries to send various messages. For example, the red carnation used to mean “my heart aches for you”. The recipient in his or, more likely, her turn could send a cabbage rose back (which would mean “I confess my love”) or a dried up white rose that in flower language means “you leave me cold”. Nowadays the most popular way to tell about the feeling is sending a floral composition of three long-stemmed red roses to the lady you worship.
